Nagasawa Rosetsu: Master of Brush and Emotion
The Artist
Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754–1799) was a virtuoso of the brush who trained in the prestigious studio of Maruyama Ōkyo. Although he soon established himself as an independent artist, he continued to innovatively build upon his master’s techniques, particularly through his experiments with ink wash painting (sumi-e). Rosetsu mastered the interplay of line and space, harnessing the natural solubility of ink in water to create extraordinary visual effects. By 1782, he was already recognized as one of Kyoto’s preeminent painters, celebrated for the versatility and playfulness that defined the art of the late Edo period.
From Eccentricity to "Kawaii"
While Rosetsu inherited Ōkyo’s technical skill, he did not share his master’s composed temperament. Critics of the era noted a certain haiki in his work—an unrestrained energy that stood in stark contrast to Ōkyo’s restraint. It wasn't until the 20th century that his work received a fresh interpretation: art historian Tsuji Nobuo included him in the kisō canon—the "eccentric" artists, visionaries known for their "strange" or unconventional creations.
The 21st century, however, has rebranded him as the "Master of Kawaii." With extraordinary tenderness and a nearly Buddhist reverence for all living things, Rosetsu portrayed small, charming, and lively creatures that resonate deeply with modern sensibilities.
Weekend Sweetness: Rosetsu’s Puppies
In the spirit of birthday joy, I wanted to introduce you to these "unbearably cute" puppies. To be honest, they remind me so much of my own dog, Pablo ❤️. I wasn’t alone in my admiration at the museum; other visitors were also quietly squealing "kawaii!", unable to take their eyes off these fluffy little bundles of happiness.
I’m sharing these two paintings with you so you can enjoy these little "joy-motes" yourselves. I think the most important takeaway from these works is simply the beauty of unconditional love. No one loves as purely as a dog—my Pablo is the perfect example; he shares his heart not just with me, but with every stranger he meets on the street 😉.
